Here’s a drill that gives me the sensation of what I feel is happening in Annika’s backswing. I learned it from a friend, Scott Perry, at Lakeside Golf Course in Beverly, Ohio. This drill helped me to stop overextending my backswing and create a more compact, powerful and repeating golf swing.
Stand in your normal golf setup with a golf cart behind you. You can also do this with your back to a wall (but not touching the wall).
Take the club back and immediately bend your right elbow. You almost feel as if you are picking up the club. You will notice immediately that the club head will be outside your hands. Rotate your shoulders. The golf club should be in a compact, set position that prepares you for your downswing. If you overextend your arms too much in the backswing, the club becomes too flat and you will hit the cart or the wall as you rotate your shoulders.
The great thing about this drill is that during mid-round, when your golf swing may leave you, this drill helps to get your backswing on plane.
