The Road to the Pro Tour

My goal in the game of golf has been clear from the very start of my golfing life: I want to play professional tour golf. I can’t see myself doing anything else.

But to reach any goal, you have to have a plan — and you need people to support you along the way. Like most aspiring tour professionals, I'm in search of backing to help me reach my goal.

What are my goals? My planned route to the professional tour isn’t what you’d call conventional. I’ve been asked if I’d ever attend PGA Qualifying School. My answer: If I could afford it, sure. But I don't think it's the best route. To go through the stages of Qualifying School is extremely expensive, and there’s no guarantee you will make it. Even a good player can have one bad round.

I believe the best way to make it on tour is to play your way. With the addition of the Nationwide Tour and its growth, I believe the Monday Qualifier – which costs between $200 and $400 per event – is a realistic way to become a part of a professional tour. It gives you a chance to play with tough competition in a professional environment. And if you make the cut, it can open the door to a career in tour golf and put some additional cash flow into your pocket.

What's more, smaller pro tours such as the Golden Bear Tour, Nationwide Tour, and the Hooters Tour offer up attractive opportunities for players.

In this game, it’s all about focus, determination and guts. If you give that to the game, you’ll always get something in return.

The Big Break
In the fall of 2003, I was featured as one of 10 aspiring tour professionals chosen from a nationwide search to participate on The Golf Channel's first reality show series. Learn about my experiences.
