I
never miss. This may seem like an unrealistic statement when it comes to
putting, but what I mean is I never miss hitting a solid putt. Through the
years, I’ve developed a putting concept that gives my ball the best chance
to get in the hole – or close to it – almost every time.
Like
many golfers, I’ve experienced ups and downs with my swing. I got a late
start in the game, and it’s taken me many years to develop a workable golf
swing. But when it comes to putting, I’ve always had natural ability. When I
first started playing golf, I thought I was simply blessed. No matter where
I played or what putter I was using, putting was comfortable and easy for
me.
My
friends were mystified because they continually struggled on the putting
green. For a long time, I couldn’t pinpoint what influenced my success.
After analyzing my approach, however, I slowly came to realize my talent had
more to do with my younger years playing baseball and shooting pool than
pure, native ability.
My
athletic youth had taught me to develop a keen sense of hand-eye
coordination that I instinctively carried over into my putting stroke. When
I realized this was my key, I stopped testing out different setups, stroke
styles, and grips and focused on honing my hand-eye coordination. From
there, I developed the concept that is the focus of this book.
Now I
teach my putting approach to others, many of whom are surprised when I show
them a concept rather than a putting stroke. I believe putting is not about
a particular grip, stance, or stroke – but a way of looking at the ball as
you stroke it. It’s the answer to hitting solid putts over and over.
Too
many players make putting harder than it really is. I tell my students
putting should be one of the easiest parts of their game. Think about the
simplicity of putting: Only in putting do you get to clean your ball and
place it on a surface any way you like; you can even mark your ball. The
stroke is so short, your room for error decreases because your club isn’t
moving 100 MPH.
Even
so, I see many players struggle every time they stand over a three-foot putt
– and not just amateurs. Putting frustrations have ended the careers of many
top professional players. What’s more, putting equipment is the best it’s
ever been. Millions of dollars are spent by companies on the development of
new putting technology and consumers on the latest putters. Still yet,
putting remains one of the game’s most contentious aspects.
Of
course, we’re obsessed with putting because if you do it well, it opens up
your entire game. Putting is critical to your score
as well as your mindset. Nothing gives you more confidence on the golf
course than making good putts. Likewise, nothing dampens your spirit more
than a series of bad putts.
In
this book, you will learn my concept for solid putting, based on the science
of hand-eye coordination. Most of the game’s greatest putters naturally use
this technique, but they often aren’t aware of it. That’s because it’s never
been fully explained … until now.
I
think you’ll be surprised how simple it is and how quickly it can change
your game. I’m not saying my approach will make you the greatest putter in
the world, but your increased success on the greens will become a contagious
and positive spirit that will carry you through your round – and your life.
