The Big Break

Rick Smith, co-host of the 2003 "The Big Break" and renowned golf instructor to the pros, poses with Charles Calhoun during the taping of the show.

Chosen from a nationwide search, I participated in the debut of The Golf Channel's reality show "The Big Break" in the fall of 2003. The show is a 10-part original series of weekly golf challenges. Each of the finalists competed in skills and elimination challenges, with one golfer being eliminated each week.

The series took place at Treetops Resorts in Gaylord, Mich. Rick Smith, who instructs the likes of Phil Mickelson and Rocco Mediate, co-hosted the show.

Although I didn't make it all the way, the experience was enlightening. It reinforced my desire to play golf at the highest level and gave me an opportunity to present myself as an individual to the world. I also met a group of guys who enjoy golf and life as much as I do.
